I have a home renovation DIY method for replacing a fly screen, which I’d like to share. The only things you’ll need are fly screen mesh and a spline roller. I cleaned the existing spline and reused it because it was still in good condition. The new fly screen mesh is a big improvement compared to the old one, which I had replaced about 10 years ago. I bought a 30 metre fly screen mesh from Bunnings and a plastic spline roller. However, I would recommend using a wooden roller or one that has a rubber grip instead of a plastic one because the grooves on the plastic one made my hand sore after rolling a few fly screens.
Here’s a picture of a before and after photo:
Here’s another I did for a friend as well:
Just changing the fly screen mesh does make a big difference as you can see from the above pictures. The process and steps that I’ve used are:
- Remove the spline and old fly screen mesh
- Clean the frame
- Place the new fly screen mesh on the frame
- Place the rubber spline and start at one of the top corners of the frame. The reason for this is that most people don’t look at the top
- Use the rubber spline roller and push the spine into the frame. Hold the mesh along the corners to make sure it doesn’t move. Use the spline roller edge to push the spline rubber corners.
- Use a sharp retractable knife to cut the excess fly screen mesh. I choose to cut near the corner of the spline and the frame rather than cutting along the edge of the frame. Watch the video to understand this.
