It has been over 16 years since I first launched my first startup, Advertise Me, and it has been slowly growing to be one of Australia’s most reputable digital solutions companies. I’ve met and even attended meetings whereby clients have heard about Advertise Me. I’m always proud when I hear these compliments especially since our company has always been bootstrapped. Mind you, an entrepreneur’s journey is not always smooth and we did hit some challenges along the way but in the end, there was always something we learnt from it. My skill level in different areas has continually improved, whether on how to bug fix, build websites, manage money, staff, clients, business and relationships – it has been a learning curve.
What I love about creating digital products is the ability to ideate and make that idea a reality. Then comes the joy of having people interact, use the product, and provide feedback. From this feedback, we have to iterate and improve the product which sometimes involves scrapping the whole product and building it again.
Over the years, we have even built internal product tools to support our business workflows and processes. One tool that comes to mind is Sponsor My Articles – a WordPress tool to help monetise and manage WordPress post sponsorships. One of the biggest challenges with creating a digital product is finding buyers or clients to use the product and eventually making your first sale. My recommendation is to learn about digital marketing and find strategies that help you sell and market your products. For my businesses, I have leveraged some knowledge I built over the years by building websites and SEO. I have never paid for Search Engine Marketing besides doing some very basic testing.
There are other tools I have built that are not related to the company I started and I built these because of a specific need when managing the many websites I own. Another WordPress tool I built (I didn’t develop it but hired a WordPress developer freelancer) is called Notification Box. You will see a popup (some will find this annoying) but it’s a WordPress social proof plugin that displays notifications and messages. It is compatible with WooCommerce, BuddyPress and any custom taxonomy. I plan to write more about this in the future so make sure you subscribe to my newsletter.
