Like many families in New South Wales, Australia, we’re in lockdown and life can get a bit boring. If you have some board games tucked away in the cupboards or in the garage now is a great time to dust off the covers and start teaching and playing with the kids. I decided to play Scrabble with the kids so that they could improve on their vocabulary and mathematics. It’s also a fun game to play!
You can buy the Scrabble board game from here if you don’t have one:
If you haven’t played Scrabble before then let me summarise how the game works. All the players pick out 7 tiles from a bag. You must always have 7 tiles on your tile rack. Each tile has a letter and a value for that letter and you use the tiles to create words that can be placed on the Scrabble board. You get a score for all the letters you place plus any bonuses such as Double Letter Score, Tripple Letter Score, Double Word Score and Tripple Word Score. The biggest bonus is called Bingo (50 points) which you can earn by placing a word with all the 7 tiles. You can use existing tiles on the board to create your words and you do have the option to swap tiles from the bag if you can’t make a word with the existing tiles but it does mean you will skip your turn. The game ends when there are no more tiles left in the bag and when everyone is unable to place their tiles on the board. The value of the tiles left is deducted from the total scores. The one with the highest score wins!
Now if you play any board game with your family at the dining table, changing the view of the board is a big hassle and a disadvantage for some of the players. Here’s an example:
You either have to rotate the board or tilt your head to view the board so you can read all the words. One hack we use when playing the Scrabble game is to use a Lazy Susan.
This is basically a rotating tray that you can use to spin the board, that way you can see all the words and letter in the correct orientation. Here’s a quick video of how it works:https://youtu.be/oyMcjhtGSEs
